| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a study conducted to "evaluate...fertilizers for browntop golf greens." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the trial was carried out for three years (2005-07) on browntop established two years previously and mowed at 5 mm [millimeters]. The soil was a silt loam with an initial pH of 4.9 and Olsen P of 67 ppm [parts per million]." Reports that "ammonium in both forms had similar performance...It had the best year round quality and produced significantly better winter quality than all other N [nitrogen] sources." Concludes that "ammonium sulphate was an excellent nitrogen source for browntop in New Zealand and produced high quality turf year round, suppressed weed and moss invasion, and reduced susceptibility to mild Fusarium patch disease. Sulphur from flowable sulphur improved the performance of most fertilisers [fertilizers], but not enough to match the quality of ammonium sulphate. Sulphur was damaging in combination with ammonium sulphate and should be used with caution. Ferrous sulphate used in combination with ammonium sulphate helped to resist moss invasion and reduce weeds." |
