Abstract/Contents:Discusses the "midsummer, physiological decline of cool-season or C-3 turfgrasses...in the Midwest region." Mentions a study which "found midsummer physiological decline was independent of disease." States that "soil temperature (abiotic factor) was the primary contributor to root mortality." Offers potential resolutions to physiological decline, including to "increase the mowing height, or use a newer, denser bentgrass variety rather than Penncross." Presents a study conducted to "determine the effect of shade on putting green health in Chicago." Highlights the WatchDog® Model 2475 Plant Growth Station which measures "air temperature, soil temperature, relative humidity, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR)." Reports the "effect of shade on a golf green environment" and the "effect of shade on golf green health." Concludes that "shaded greens are physiologically different, and height of cut adjustment (up) around midsummer is probably necessary to preserve their health."
