Abstract/Contents:Discusses rain in New Zealand. Explains that "when air rises above the Earth's surface it experiences lower surrounding pressure. This causes the air to expand, and this, in turn, causes its temperature to fall. As the air becomes colder some of the water gas it contains condenses to form the billions of small droplets that clouds are made of. If enough upward motion occurs, cloud droplets become so plentiful that they combine to become rain." Mentions the use of weather maps as a possible way to find "weather systems likely to produce rain." Describes low-pressure systems, fronts, and convergence zones. Also mentions rain showers, stating that "showers occur when air at the bottom of the atmosphere is heated by relatively warm land or sea, or when cold air aloft moves over warmer air at low levels." Also discusses the possible effects of El Niño and La Niña, stating that "the strongest influence on the year-to-year variations in the weather in New Zealand is the Southern Oscillation, whose phases are more commonly known as El Niño and La Niña." Offers predictions for future rainfall in New Zealand, stating that "rainfall in the northeast of the North Island is expected to be more frequent and heavier than it was through the [1980s] and [1990s] while the southwest of the South Island should be drier."
