Abstract/Contents:Discusses soil testing, explaining that "the aim of analytical testing of soil (growing medium) and plant tissue is to estimate the soil nutrient resource available to growing plants and the nutrient status of the growing plants. Using both soil and plant tissue analyses may be interpreted to indicate if there are factors such as nutrient interactions of adverse pH conditions affecting nutrient uptake." Describes two possible methods of interpreting soil test results: sufficiency level of available nutrients (SLAN) and base cation saturation ratio (BCSR). States that "the best interpretation method for soil tests should consider both SLAN and BCSR where for low CEC [cation exchange capacity] soils a maintenance fertiliser [fertilizer] programme [program] for nutrients such as K [potassium] may be on a 'little as often' basis." Briefly discusses plant tissue testing, stating that "leaf testing of turf is conducted occasionally as a snap-shot of nutrient status or uptake and the results should be considered in addition to the soil test where a nutritional disorder is suspected."
