| Abstract/Contents: | Discusses possible benefits to using statistics and databases as tools to help improve the performance of a cricket pitch. States that "core sampling and qualitative player/umpire opinion is the normal protocol for assessment of pitch performance. This method can often be misrepresentative or a biased indication of how the pitch actually played. Comparing match data eliminates any bias and has the potential to give a quantitative analysis of pitch performance. This could be used in conjunction with other pitch measuring procedures to give a clearer indication of how the pitch played." Explains that "preparation methods, soil types, climatic environments, resources available and other interactions have an effect on the end result when preparing with cricket pitches. Collection and analysis of preparation variables along with data based programmes [programs] using match statistics could create a powerful management tool for the turf manager." |
