Abstract/Contents:Compares the use of sand and soil for turf race track surfaces, discusses possible advantages and disadvantages to each. States that "the main reason for clubs changing to sand is to provide a racing surface that has fewer drainage-related problems, such as heavy track conditions, or worse, track closure and cancelled meetings." Explains that "sand medium does not depend on soil structure for drainage. Individual sand grains are 'strong' (they are like small stones) and they are not damaged (broken down) by traffic." Also discusses possible sand track options, including all-weather tracks, sand carpet systems, and full sand profiles. States that "there is no doubt that for many courses around Australia and NZ [New Zealand] the advantages that soil offers over sand as a track medium out-weigh the disadvantages. For clubs with limited budget, restricted resource for course maintenance and modest amount of use, soil will inevitably work out to be a much cheaper and simpler option than sand in the short to medium term." Concludes that "a correctly designed and well maintained sand track system can provide a consistently firm and well-drained surface (and improved turf quality, particularly in wet weather)...However, sand will not be the answer for all tracks. A sand system will be more costly to build and more difficult to maintain."
