| Abstract/Contents: | "Fungicides, applied to Able 1 Kentucky bluegrass at the Rutgers Turf Research Farm in Adelphia, NJ, were evaluated for their ability to control stem rust once disease developed. Turf was maintained at a cutting height of 1.5 in. Seed was sown on 23 Sep 84 in a sandy loam of pH 5.9. Bluegrass was fertilized between Apr and Jul 85 with 2.9 lb actual N(10-6-4)/1000 sq ft. Herbicides were applied on 16 Apr 85 (0.75 lb 2,4-D + 0.25 lb Dicamba/A) and 18 Apr (15 lb Dacthal 75W/A). Individual treatment plots, 3 ft x 9 ft, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with four replications. Fungicides were applied with a CO2 powered boom sprayer with Tee Jet 8003 noozles, at 30 psi, in water equivalent to 2 gal/1000 sq ft. Treatments were applied on 6 and 24 sep. Individual plots were visually rated for disease on the basis of percent turf area infected. Turf was left unmowed after 1 Sep to encourage stem rust development. Rust was evenly distributed among turf plots when fungicide application commenced on 6 Sep. All fungicide treatments, except Daconil, adequately protected turf during 21-day treatment intervals. Banner, DPX H6573 and Bayleton provided excellent control of stem rust up to 35 days after treatment. RH 3866's residual activity, however, was inadequate after 28 days. All products failed to protect turf 5 weeks after treatment, even though disease ratings were statistically different from check plots. No phytotoxicity or growth inhibitory effects were observed." |
