Abstract/Contents:"Three experiments were conducted for 2 years each to evaluate annual bluegrass control in bluegrass or bluegrass-perennial ryegrass fairways. The test sites were known to have high populations of annual bluegrass during winter and spring. A three wheel plot sprayer with boom was used to apply treatments in 468 L/ha. Only 1/2 of each plot received the repeat treatments during the second year. Experiment I: When 0.6 kg ai/ha of ethofumesate was applied 3 or more times in the fall, annual bluegrass control was satisfactory throughout the spring. Almost complete control was attained after 2-years of fall treatments. Two applications of 1.1 and 2.2 kg/ha of ethofumesate resulted in excellent control of annual bluegrass and bluegrass-perennial ryegrass quality was acceptable in July of the second year. As annual bluegrass was controlled during the first year, lower quality turfgrass cover was apparent due to thin foliage. However, with excellent control, the turfgrass cover was better during the second year. Two applications of 2.2 kg/ha ethofumesate provided satisfactory control of annual bluegrass for 2 years. Lower rates required annual treatments for suitable levels of annual bluegrass control. Annual bluegrass was considered satisfactory quality turfgrass during winter, but it began vigorous flowering and died-out during summer. Thus, untreated turfgrass was generally better quality during the first winter and early spring. The bluegrass and perennial ryegrass cover was improved during the second year. Experiment II: The percent annual bluegrass groundcover was reduced with ethofumesate at 0.8 kg/ha applied twice in the fall. After a second year with two annual treatments, annual bluegrass control was near complete. Without the second year treatments, annual bluegrass cover returned to the level in untreated plots. When the second treatment was increased to 1.7 kg/ha, control of annual bluegrass was improved during the first year. In this study, ethofumesate at 1.7 kg/ha (applied twice in fall) needed to be applied each year for continuous annual bluegrass control. With only one application of ethofumesate each year at 1.7 kg/ha, annual bluegrass control was about 80%. At 2.5 kg/ha, ethofumesate gave excellent annual bluegrass control after the second year treatment. At 1.7 kg/ha or higher rates, ethofumesate caused some browning of the turfgrass and without annual bluegrass, the turfgrass remained thin. This resulted in lower quality fairway turfgrass until May. Experiment III: Leaf tip yellowing was apparent after September treatments. In this study, three applications were required each fall with ethofumesate at 0.8 kg/ha for acceptable annual bluegrass control. With dead annual bluegrass, requiring November treatment, the turfgrass was brown in March (48 to 75%). All leaf browning was gone by early May. In general, three applications of ethofumesate at 0.8 kg/ha was needed annually for continuous annual bluegrass control. The kentucky bluegrass was injured slightly in September and more severely brown following the third treatment in November. After a few mowings of the turfgrass in Spring, the bluegrass appeared normal green again."
