| Abstract/Contents: | "The postemergence grass herbicides; fluazifop-p-butyl, sethoxydim, quizalofop, and haloxyfop-methyl, were evaluated for controlling broadleaf signalgrass(Brachairia platyphylla [Griseb,] Nash), large crabgrass (Digitaria sanguinalis [L.] Scop.), and seedling Johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense [L.] Pers.) in sweet potatoes. All treatments were initiated 28-30 days after transplanting. Split applications were made at 30 or 90 days after transplanting. In all cases the grasses were in the desired growth range and under ideal growing conditions. Sweet potato plants were tolerant to all herbicides at all rates. Any reduction in crop vigor was generally associated with early weed competition and was not evident at later evaluations. Since the herbicides were applied under ideal conditions, very good grass control was apparent two weeks after treatment. Some increased activity was seen as the rates increased. Excellent control of all grass species was achieved at four weeks after treatment, even at the lowest rate (0.0625 lb ai/A of fluazifop-p-butyl, quizalofop, and fluazifop-p-butyl and sethoxydim did not improve control under these conditions. Yields of treated plots were not significantly different from yields of hoed check plots." |
