Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted to "evaluate turf quality performance of 30 tall fescue cultivars established in 1981 in Remington, [Virginia]." Details methods and materials used in the study, stating that "the study was conducted on a Mecklinburg loam...Plots were seeded on September 9, 1981 at 3 lb [pounds] per 1000 sq. ft. [square feet] utilizing traditional seeding practices...Plots were not irrigated unless drought threatened survival." Reports that "many of the varieties were assigned (A) ratings 50% or more of the time indicating that they were equal to the best performing varieties much of the time. Strongest entries in this five year test were Jaguar, Adventure, Apache, Mustang, Olympic, Rebel, Galway + Falcon + Rebel, [and] Brookston." Concludes that "several of the 33 varities tested provided adequate perfomrance and can be successfully utilized in Northern Virginia. The test has substantiated that many...'fine-bladed' tall fescues can provide consistently better turf quality than Kentucky 31 tall fescue."
