Abstract/Contents:"The experimental turf growth regulator, ACP 2110, was evaluated alone and in combination with five standard broadleaf herbicides in two studies at the Virginia Tech Turf Research Center, Blacksburg. The objectives of this research were (i) to determine if there was a difference in turf growth regulation when ACP 2110 was applied alone or in combination with broadleaf herbicides and (ii) to determine if there was a significant difference in broadleaf weed control when broadleaf herbicides were applied alone or in combination with ACP 2110. All treatments were applied in 280 L water ha-1 and 0.25% v/v nonionic surfactant at 210 kPa to common Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Treatments for the first study were applied April 25, 1988, to 8 cm turf, mowed twice after 100% green-up. Treatments for the second study were applied August 24, 1988, to 8 cm turf. Each study consisted of three replications in a randomized complete block. Standard rates of 2,4-D, dicamba, 2,4-D plus dicamba, and four commercially available postemergence broadleaf herbicide formulations, 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba, MCPA plus mecroprop plus dicamba, 2,4-D plus triclopyr and 2,4-D plus dichlorprop were used. At two weeks there was no significant difference in turf height between ACP 2110 alone, at 0.12 kg ha-1, or in combination with any broadleaf herbicide. At four weeks turf treated with ACP 2110 in combination with 2,4-D plus dichlorprop, dicamba and 2,4-D plus dicamba was significantly taller then turf treated with ACP 2110 alone. There was no difference in turf height between treatments at six weeks. Phytotoxicity occurring from ACP 2110 plus broadleaf herbicide was negligable and not greater than with ACP 2110 alone. Quality ratings for treatments containing both the growth regulator and a broadleaf herbicide were excellent. In contrast, all other treatments exhibited poor quality due to a ragged appearance of the turf from numerous broadleaf weeds or unacceptable turf height. Weed control with ACP 2110 was slightly greater than or equal to the non-treated check, however, it afforded excellent control of white clover (Trifolium repens L.). Addition of ACP 2110 to the broadleaf herbicides did not affect broadleaf weed control except for control of corn speedwell (Veronica arvensis L.) by 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba. 2,4-D plus mecoprop plus dicamba alone afforded greater control, 57%, of corn speedwell than when in combination with ACP 2110, with 17% control."
