Abstract/Contents:Discusses lead levels in synthetic-turf fields. Compares lead and lead chromate, stating that lead chromate is "used to improve color fastness in the pigments of many consumer products like synthetic turf." Explains that lead chromate is "encapsulated to prevent if from being readily absorbed by the body or realesed into the environment." Reports "that the encapsulated lead chromate did not present a human health risk." States that although "small levels of lead were detected on the surface of some of the older fields, none of the tested fields released amounts of lead that would be harmful to children." Notes that the Synthetic Turf Council(STC) plans to eliminate the lead in synthetic turf fields, Reporting that "specifically, STC members will reduce lead levels in all pigments usted to color synthetic turf to 300 parts-per-million (ppm) or less no later than January 1, 2010 and to 100 ppm or less no later than January 1, 2012" Discusses the New York Department of Health's fact sheet on synthetic turf. States that "the New York Department of Health issued a sheet on synthetic turf adressing health and safety considerations similar to the New york City report, including, injury, infection, latex allergy, chemical exposure and heat stress."
