Abstract/Contents:"The objectives of this study were to research the timing of release of nitrogen (N) between various experimental and industry standard organic fertilizers. Research was conducted in Ames, IA on 'Nassau' Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) over the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Fertilizer treatments included seven industry standards, four experimental products, and an untreated control. The industry standards included Milorganite, Renaissance, Secure 'N Safe, Nature Safe, and three products from Suståne. Plots were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Products were applied at a rate of 48.8 kg N ha-1 three times per season. Applications began 21 May and 28 May in 2004 and 2005, respectively. There were seven weeks between application one and two, and eight weeks between applications two and three. Turfgrass response to the fertilizers was determined by clipping yield, quality ratings, and N content of harvested clippings. Turf receiving Rootein Spring Green Up produced the most clippings, averaged over both years. Rootein Summer Nourish, Leovex, and Four: All Seasons produced clipping amounts comparable to the industry standard fertilizers. Turf receiving Rootein Summer Nourish, Rootein Spring Green Up, Leovex, and Four: All Seasons all had quality ratings higher than the control, and were either better than or equal to the industry standards, averaged over both years. In 2004, clippings harvested from turf receiving Rootein Spring Green Up, Rootein Summer Nourish, Leovex, and Four: All Seasons had more N content or were no different than the industry standards. In 2005, clippings harvested from turf receiving the four experimental fertilizers had more N content or were no different than the industry standards."
