Abstract/Contents: | "Research was conducted to evaluate the response of common turfgrass weeds to glyphosate based on plant kill method, weed species, and plant age. Greenhouse grown large crabgrass, dandelion, yellow nutsedge, annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass received glyphosate treatments structured logarithmically with midpoints ranging from 0.00 to 37.5 kg acid equivalents (ae) glyphosate ha-1 (0.0, 0.0075, 0.0098, 0.019, 0.038, 0.056, 0.075, 0.19, 0.38, 0.56, 0.75, 1.68, 3.4, 7.5 and 38 kg ae glyphosate ha-1) at 30 or 100 days after seeding. Plant kill was determined 70 days after treatment. The natural log of glyphosate rate was used to determine the lethal rate required to kill 50 and 90% of each species population. Glyphosate rates required to kill 90% of each species were 1.2 to 59.8 times higher than recommended label rates and previous rate response experiments. Glyphosate rate required to kill 50% of weed population was predicted to be 1.3 for large crabgrass, 1.5 for dandelion, 3.9 for yellow nutsedge, 1.4 for annual bluegrass, and 2.6 kg ae glyphosate ha-1 for creeping bentgrass when applied 30 days after seeding and 7.6, 4.0, 3.6, 1.6, 3.4 kg ae glyphosate ha-1, respectively, when applied 100 days after seeding. Glyphosate rate required to kill 90% of weed population was predicted to be 2.0, 3.5, 14, 3.3, and 10 kg ae glyphosate ha-1, respectively, when applied 30 days after seeding and 25, 23, 20, 7.2, and 13 kg ae glyphosate ha-1, respectively 100 days after seeding. Creeping bentgrass and yellow nutsedge required rates 8 and 6 times higher than recommended label (1.68) to provide 90% kill." |
