Abstract/Contents:"The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of fungicides for the control of dollar spot on a mixed creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass experimental green at UC Riverside. The green was a 90/10 mix of creeping bentgrass and annual bluegrass, established in 2005 from sod. Turf was mowed 3 days a week at a height of 0.25-in. and irrigated daily according to ET needs. Treatment plots were 6 ft x 4 ft, and each plot was inoculated on 21 Sep with approximately 0.2 to 0.4 oz of oat seed infested with S. homoeocarpa spread out evenly onto each plot. Inoculum was produced by growing S. homoeocarpa on autoclaved oat seed for 4 weeks at 28°C prior to use using a mix of five isolates obtained from five different California locations. Disease symptoms developed on the plots approximately 3 Oct. Curative fungicide treatments were applied starting 9 Oct to four replicated plots per treatment with a CO2- powered backpack sprayer, using TeeJet 8002 flat fan nozzles to deliver the equivalent of 2 gal dilute fungicide spray per 1,000 sq ft at 35 psi at an approximate 14- or 21-day interval, with the last application being made on 20 Nov. Disease severity was rated by evaluation of percent area diseased on a 0 to 100 scale. Area underneath the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated based upon the severity readings taken from 23 Oct to 4 Dec. Disease severity data and AUDPC was analyzed by ANOVA and mean comparisons were performed using the Waller-Duncan k-ratio t-test (k=100). The initial disease symptoms were very uniform throughout the plots prior to fungicide application. A drop in maximum air temperatures into the low 60ddgF range during mid Oct appeared to reduce disease development, but temperatures in the 80°F range in November appeared to reactivate disease development. No significant differences between treatments were observed until 6 Nov. Overall, all treatments provided significantly different control compared to the water only check. AUDPC values indicated that the Heritage TL only treatment provided the least control, but control was statistically equivalent to almost all of the other treatments. Heritage TL applications appeared to provide 40 to 58% control compared to the water only check. Heritage TL mixed with 2 fl oz of Daconil WeatherStik was roughly equivalent to 2 fl oz of Daconil WeatherStik used alone. DMI-fungicides and mixtures (Banner, Concert, Trinity), tended to provide the best control (numerically) in the trial on individual evaluation dates - although statistically, they were often equivalent to other non-DMI treatments."
