Abstract/Contents: | "A golf green in Westfield, Massachusetts, approximately 83 years old, was chosen to evaluate DiTera for the reduction of plant parasitic nematodes. DiTera is freeze-dried preparation of the fungus Myrothecium verrucaria. The green consisted of a 50:50 mixture of annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. Top-dressing over the years resulted in approximately 4 in. of sandy soil. The treatment and control were replicated six times (plots were 6 ft x 6 ft) and completely randomized. DiTera was applied to the plots at the rate of 16.3 oz/1,000 sq ft in 55 gal of water. An additional 55 gal/1,000 sq ft was applied for a total of 0.18 in. of water. Five applications were made on: 2 May, 16 May, 4 Jun, 25 Jun, 16 Jul and 6 Aug. Plant density and root length were evaluated on 2 May, 16 Jul and 3 Sep by removing four 1 x 4 in. soil cores from each plot; the roots measured from the bottom of the thatch layer to the end of the roots. The same cores were taken back to the lab and the individual number of plants in each core was counted. Soil was sampled for nematodes on 04 Apr, 28 May, 02 Jul, 6 Aug and 3 Sep by removing 10, 1 x 4 in. soil cores per plot and bulking together. Nematodes were recovered by wet sieving/sugar flotation and identified to genus. The concentration of tylenchorhynchus (stunt) and Hoplolaimus (lance) nematodes were assessed in each sample. The data were subjected to analysis of variance. There were no observed differences of turf color or thinning among the treatments but the superintendent noted some unidentified plots were wilting in Sep and some were not wilting. There were no statistically significant differences (P=0.05) between the DiTera treatment and the control for the tylenchorhynchus population on any of the assay dates. However, on 3 Sep plots in the DiTera treatment had a statistically lower population of hoplolaimus than the control. There were no differences in root length between the DiTera treatment and the control but DiTera resulted in a statistically significant increase in plant density on 16 Jul but not on the other dates." |
