Abstract/Contents:Presents information on the maintenance of irrigation systems, discussing at length "(A) Amount of water to apply [and] (B) Frequency of Irrigation." Identifies potential reasons why only wetting the upper layers of soil is undesirable, highlighting shallow rooting systems and the tendency of some plant species to ingress. Suggests the use of a "water balance approach, which operates on the principle that the soil is a closed system, with the input (of rainfall and irrigation) being matched by the output (of deep percolation and evapotranspiration)." States that common observable factors that might indicate when to irrigate include soil resistance to probing, soil feel, foot printing, changes in plant color, and the weight of clippings. Presents tables on average evapotranspiration values for Palmerston North, New Zealand, and a guide for moisture availability based on feel. Indicates that this article is to be continued in a later issue of Sports Turf Review.
