Abstract/Contents:Discusses bowling greens during the early 1980s in New Zealand. Focuses on late renovations, poor greens, the renovation of deteriorating greens, and alternative methods of greens maintenance. Suggests that "to renovate a sparse, thatchy green there is no alternative but to groove heavily in early autumn." Emphasizes that "rubbing soil well into the grooves is [potentially] critical to the success of the renovation." Notes that "as the depth of thatch builds up without renovation the surface becomes softer and as the softness increases the proportion of Cotula dioica diminishes. Its place is [often] taken by Colobanthus, a very fine starweed-like plant."
