| Abstract/Contents: | "Five petroleum products (gasoline, motor oil, hydraulic fluid, brake fluid and grease) were applied to closely mowed Tifgreen bermudagrass turf to determine their specific symptoms of turf damage, assess the comparative rates of turf recovery following petroleum spills, and to evaluate treatments of activated charcoal, calcined clay fines, and detergent for their effectiveness in counteracting turf damage and enhancing turf recovery. The treatments were applied 20 minutes after application of the petroleum products. Gasoline and hydraulic fluid were best identified by their odors and rapid burning of the turf. Motor oil produced a shiny, lubricious appearance for about 2 days until burning symptoms appeared. Brake fluid was slower acting, but produced a response similar to that of gasoline. Washing with detergent hastened turf recovery from hydraulic fluid, brake fluid, and motor oil spills. However, the initial turf damage due to motor oil was spread by washing with detergent. Neither activated charcoal nor calcined clay proved effective in improving recovery rates of the turf. No treatments enhanced turf recovery from gasoline or grease spills. However, turf recovered within 3-4 weeks for gasoline burns." |
