Abstract/Contents:"Two commercial insecticides were tested with and without piperonyl butoxide (PBO) for field efficacy against ABW on golf course fairway turf in spring 2008. The insecticide products were Talstar One (bifenthrin) and Allectus, a commercial combination of bifenthrin and imidacloprid. Two forms of piperonyl butoxide were included in the study - Kicker (which contains PBO and pyrethrins) and Exponent (which contains PBO only). Each treatment was made 7 May 2008 and all plots were sampled 5 Jun 2008 to determine the efficacy of the compounds against larvae of the first generation of ABW. The test was conducted at TPC - River Highlands, Cromwell, CT. The conditions at the time of application were as follows: air temp, 65° F; soil temp (at 2.0 inches), 54° F; water pH, 6.3; sunny and clear, light NW breeze (<2 mph); soil pH, 6.0; buffered pH, 7.0; CEC, 3.9 Meq/100g; thatch ca. 0.5 inch. Treatment plots were 6 ft by 6 ft, replicated five times, and arranged in a CRB design. All treatments were applied with a watering can (2 qt water per plot), with half the material applied in one direction and the remainder applied in a perpendicular direction. Plots were irrigated with 0.05 inch water within 1 h after application. Product efficacy was evaluated on 5 Jun by removing 10 1.85-inch diameter cores from near the center of each plot, transporting the cores to our laboratory in Amherst, MA, and using a saline solution to extract all stages except eggs. Each core was recorded separately, and all counts were included in statistical analyses (Waller Duncan MRT; 0.05 significance level; F = 9.92; P < 0.0001). Larvae per core actually reflects counts of all larvae and pupae. Adults were not included in the analysis because of their mobility. There were more than 90 larvae per sq. ft. in the untreated checks, slightly above the generally accepted spring action level of 30 to 80 larvae per sq. ft. All treatments except Kicker alone or Exponent alone reduced larval populations significantly compared to the untreated plots. However, Talstar One did not provide agronomically acceptable levels of control (control was only 60% and most golf courses aspire to achieve at least 75 to 80% control). There appeared to be an additive (not synergistic) effect of Kicker on the efficacy of Talstar One and no effect of Kicker on the efficacy of Allectus. There appeared to be no effect of Exponent on Talstar One or Allectus. This golf course has a history of moderate pyrethroid use (two or three applications a year), which may account for the somewhat reduced efficacy of Talstar One and should have predisposed it to benefit from synergists such as piperonyl butoxide."
