Abstract/Contents:"A two-year field study compared 14 tall fescue genotypes with and without irrigation. Evaluation of summer growth under irrigation indicated greater forage yields, more tillering, greater weight per tiller, higher leaf elongation rates, and higher levels of leaf carbohydrate as compared to the plants in the non-irrigated experiment. Stem base carbohydrate levels were higher in the non-irrigated plants. Growth of non-irrigated tall fescue during the fall growth period was enhanced over that previously irrigated by faster leaf extension and greater weight per tiller rather than soil fertility. However, the difference was not enough to compensate for lower yields during the summer. The compensatory effect carried over to the following spring as indicated by the higher number of tillers. Yield compensatory effects appears to be caused by physiological fatique and morphological differences. Management objectives should take into account the effect of sumemr irrigation on the subsequent performance of cool-season forages."
