Abstract/Contents: | In pot experiments in a glasshouse, nematode numbers equivalent to 1000 Xiphinema diversicaudatum (Micol.) Thorne per litre of soil produced extensive galling on roots of seedling perennial ryegrass and tall fescue. Roots of cocksfoot and timothy had significantly fewer galls. At 1000 X. diversicaudatum per litre of soil, the maximum root length in ryegrass, tall fescue and cocksfoot was significantly less, by 28, 25, and 22% respectively, than in the uninoculated plants, and ryegrass and tall fescue had significantly fewer crown roots than the controls. The effects on shoot growth were small. |
