Abstract/Contents:"Activated charcoal can be used to adsorb and nullify the harmful effects of many chemicals. In contaminated seedbeds charcoal can improve grass stands, improve rooting of transplanted sod and reduce grass injury. Where chemical spill, oeverapplication or misuse takes place, one can alleviate damage to established turfgrass from some chemicals by using charcoal. In earlier studies we noted that preemergence crabgrass herbicides performed satisfactorily when used in grass areas that received charcoal in the seedbed the year before. However, where charcoal was applied to the surface of established grass we noted some reduction in the effectiveness of preemergence herbicides used 5 months later. Herbicides performed normally when used 17 months after charcoal use. THe purpose of our tests this season are to determine if activated charcoal (GRO-SAFE) applied to the surface of established lawn and/or putting green turf will affect the performance of several fungicides and a herbicide combination used for postemergence braodleaf weed control."
