Abstract/Contents:"One of the most important aspects of greens management is topdressing. Studies through the years have shown significant benefits from spring and fall dressing with a good soil-type dressing. In recent years California studies have shown value with frequent, light topdressings with certain sands. Controversy has developed regarding this practice. Studies were initiated on three different bentgrasses at our station in 1976 in which noth soil and sand are applied lightly every four weeks and compared to spring and fall topdressing applications. Fertilizer use rates will be regulated according to response from topdressing treatments. Poa annua encroachment in greens is of prime concern and does relates to nitrogen use. Trials were initiated in 1975 on three different bentgrasses using standard and experimental herbicides in an effort to prevent encroachment of annual bluegrass. Materials are applied at three different times throughout the growing season. Nitrogen usage will be kept high in order to promote increase in Poa annua."
