Abstract/Contents:"A major nursery sod industry has developed in New England in very recent years. Very little research relating to this industry has veen done at this station as it was not previously justified. Within the past two years, a number of studies relating to production of quality sod have been initiated. This is one such study. Included in this study are four improved bluegrass varieties each seeded separately and in two, three or four way mixtures. In addition Merion Kentucky bluegrass is seeded in mixtures with Jamestown, Highlight and Pennlawn fescue in proportions of 1 part bluegrass to 1 or 2 parts of each of the fescues. The trial was seeded in late October, 1970, and a duplicate, with large 20 x 20 ft. plots was seeded at a nearby sod farm in September. Cut strips of sod have been subjected to strength and rooting tests and quality scores are taken regularly. Tiller counts have also been recorded on all bluegrass-fescue mixtures to determine changes in the plant populations from the original seed mixtures."
