Abstract/Contents:Discussion of the effects of nitrogen on turfgrass and optimal nitrogen application times. Stresses greener is not always better. Excessive or improperly timed nitrogen applications could damage turfgrasses. Nitrogen fertilization tends to increase top growth. Under rapid growth conditions, shoots take priority over rhizomes and roots. Liberal nitrogen fertilization in spring will increase top-growth at the expense of root growth, so the plant will go into summer with a shorter root system than if low to moderate rates were used. Other detriments to spring fertilization are; excessive mowing, high succulent growth, increased plant tissue hydration, and increased susceptability. Late fall fertilization is ideal once topgrowth has stopped but roots and rhizomes are still active because it allows for maximum nitrogen use. Benefits include; increased and enhanced recuperative potential during non-traffic periods, greater carbohydrate storage, and earlier spring green-up. Fertilizers independent of temperature for nitrogen released are recommended (urea, IBDU).
