Abstract/Contents:"The study was conducted at the Valentine Turfgrass Research Center, University Park, PA, on a mixed stand of annual bluegrass and creeping bentgrass. The site was maintained as a golf course green, mowed six times per week at 0.125-in. cutting height. The soil was a modified sandy clay loam with a pH of 7.0. The experiment was not fertilized prior to or during the course of the experiment. Fungicides were applied with a CO2-powered sprayer, using a TeeJet 11008E nozzle at 40 psi, in water equivalent to 2 gal per 1000 sq ft. Treatment applications were made on 7-day (24 and 31 May, 7, 14, 21, and 28 Jun, and 5 Jul) and 14-day intervals (24 May, 7 and 21 Jun, and 5 Jul). Treatment plots, 3 ft Π6 ft, were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replications of treatments. Additionally, the experimental turf area was treated with Scimitar (7.5 fl oz/A) on 8 May for cutworm. Anthracnose was active early in the season in 2007 at the site; however, the experimental area was inoculated once with Colletotrichum cereale (2.5 Π104 conidia/ml aqueous suspension) on 30 May to achieve homogeneity of disease distribution in the mixed turfgrass stands. Disease severity was assessed on 19 and 26 Jun, and 3 and 10 Jul using a disease index of 0 to 10 with 0=no disease. Anthracnose basal rot on only the annual bluegrass was evaluated, as the bentgrass was asymptomatic. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparisons of the mean values were made using the Waller-Duncan k-ratio test (k=100). Anthracnose basal rot severity was moderately high in the experimental turf area, and remained fairly active over a period of three months from late spring to mid summer. The first disease assessment showed several fungicide provided significant suppression of the disease where disease severity of 6 was noted in the untreated control plots. Ecoguard on a 7-day interval and tank mixed with Insignia (0.9 oz) on a 14-day interval or with Bio-B Plus (1.5 fl oz) and NoburN (3 fl oz) on a 7-day interval provided superior control. Additionally, Lynx at various rates, rotations of Lynx tank mixed with Signature or Daconil Ultrex, various rates of SARS and tank mixed with 3336, Trinity (1 fl oz), Insignia (0.5 oz) tank mixed with Trinity (1 fl oz), 3336 Plus (4 fl oz), and Emerald (0.18 oz), on 14-day intervals provided moderate to very good control. No phytotoxicity in any of the treatment plots was observed in the study."
