| Abstract/Contents: | "Rising salinity levels in soils originating from the irrigation of parent soil material and/or from low quality irrigation water pose a growing challenge to establishing and maintaining plant life in arid and semi-arid regions of the world. These saline conditions must be considered and addressed when turfgrasses are established. Studies have shown that moderate salinity has no effect on germination of warm and cold season grasses (Johnson et al., 2007). However, seed companies have recently introduced a coating treatment (ZEBA® ) which is purported to help germination and establishment by increasing moisture levels around the endosperm. A study conducted by Leinauer et al. (2010) found that ZEBA® coating did not improve field seed emergence, but increased the speed of establishment for some cool season grasses. Information is lacking on germination of coated seed under saline conditions as increased salinity from increased moisture may delay or prevent seedling development." |
