| Abstract/Contents: | "A field study was established in 1986 to determine the influence of calcium and pH on thatch accumulation under Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.). Native pH is 5.5, it was lowered to 4.5 with addition of HCl (0.1M) and raised to 6.5 with addition of K2CO3 (0.25 M) solution. Three soil calcium levels were established with additives of crushed gypsum. Calcium levels were equivalent to the amount added by 0, 1, and 2 x the SMP single buffer lime requirement. 1988 results indicate little effect of calcium on thatch accumulation. Thatch thickness was 19% greater at pH 4.5 and 6.5 than 5.5 (8 mm). No difference in turfgrass quality were observed. Thatch parameters including weight loss on ignition and thickness, and ancillary measurements including turfgrass quality, soil microarthropod populations, rhizome length/weight, and relative amounts of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in thatch will be measured in 1989. Results will be discussed." |
