| Abstract/Contents: | Addresses the effects of the economic recession during the late 2000's on golf course maintenance, stating that "over-watering and over-feeding are simply wasteful practices that should not be tolerated." Discusses the limited availability of resources, indicating that "the safety net of readily available water, fertiliser [fertilizer], and fungicide will not always be there." Includes that "European Union pesticide legislation will start to bite before too long. There is ongoing reassessment of active ingredients and the general trend is for fewer to be approved." Explains that "golf is an easy target for legislators...the game could see stringent regulation unless we can demonstrate that we are responsible users of the land, which means...reducing inputs." Suggests "producing evidence...with regard to how much pesticide and water we use and where we apply it." Recommends using the R&A's (Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrew, Scotland) website which provides "guidelines that promote responsible management of golf courses, with minimal inputs." |
