| Abstract/Contents: | Addresses the appearance of heather beetles as a result of wet winters and summers, indicating that they cause "anxiety and worry to those greenkeepers involved in the management of heather and the heathland resource." Details the characteristics of heather beetles and recommended maintenance practices for heather turf. Includes advice for heather turf infected by the heather beetle, suggesting to "wait one full growing season to ensure that the heather is in fact dead...[adding that] it is possible...to cut the dead grey stems back to ground level and rip through the surface with an intensive scarification treatment." States that once the beetle has appeared, "there is relatively little that can be done." Recommends managing heather on a rotational basis to minimize beetle attacks, adding that "trampling is possibly the main disturbance pressure and can itself kill heather if severe." |
