Abstract/Contents:Presents a study conducted jointly by the Agricultural Research Service sector of the United States Department of Agriculture and the University of Georgia to improve digestibility and forage yield of Pensacola bahiagrass and bermudagrass hybrids through restricted, recurrent phenotypic selection (RRPS) breeding. Includes related research conducted to screen pearl millet for disease resistant genes and evaluate its forage potential. Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that data was collected and analyzed through clipping and germplasm analysis, spaced plant tests, and forage yield screening. Reports that the most recent cycle of Tifton 9 Pensacola bahiagrass yielded 39% more forage than in previous cycles and that "the trichomeless (tr) gene in pearl millet was found to confer a high level of smut resistance." Concludes that genetic and cytoplasmic findings in pearl millet "brings us closer to producing a true-breeding hybrid. Methods developed in this study have application to transferring apomixis in other genera."
