| Abstract/Contents: | Presents a report on state-funded research in New Jersey to observe the feeding behavior of billbugs, detect Acremonium endophytes in Kentucky bluegrass and Chewings fescue, and observe the effects of other stresses on tall fescue. Briefly details the materials and methods used in the studies, highlighting laboratory research, turf trials, spaced-plant nurseries as tools of observing selected cultivars, and restricted phenotypic recurrent selection as the primary breeding program. Reports that "Kentucky bluegrass generally suffers the greatest injury" of New Jersey turf types tested for billbug infestation, and that the only Acremonium endophyte isolated in the selections, from Chewings fescue, "has produced very few choke stroma." Briefly mentions the potential intolerance of tall fescue to stem rust, and possible added stress from close mowing. Concludes that "[As of 1988], we have not found stem rust on tall fescue in our surveys...Improvement in seed production potential [of fescues] is needed to make current types commercially attractive." |
