Abstract/Contents: | "Natural and artificial sources of sulphur derived from soil parent materials, rain and fertilisers were evaluated to discuss the general concept of the sulphur supplying power of Japanese grasslands soils. Furthermore, the distribution of grasslands with low levels of sulphur supplying power were investigated. Results obtained are as follows: 1) It was shown with two different types of volcanic ash that free sujphric acid in the ash is rapidly leached out by rain. Igneous rocks contain less than 0.005% total sulphur. These facts indicate that volcanic ash soils do not always contain high amounts of sulphur. 2) Sulphur in rain contributed approximately 15 kg S per ha per annum to grassland areas distant from both sea and industry. 3) Recent increase in the use of high analysis N, P and K fertilisers has resulted in a substantial reduction in the consumption of sulphur. 4) Volcanogenous Regosols accounted for 3.3%, coarse textured and immature Ando Soils accounted for 9.7% of the total grassland area. These two soil series groups, which are most likely to be sulphur deficient when used for forage crops production, occupy roughly one fifth of the Ando Soils area which covers more than 46% of the total nation-wide grassland area. These types of grasslands are mostly distributed in the Hokkaido area." |
