Abstract/Contents:Profiles the controversial use of the Acid Treatment for turf management explaining that the treatment "involves repeated dressings of sulphate of ammonia for the express purpose of rendering soils acid." Addresses the various species of turf, notably "the bents and fescues" which are "[well] suited for sports purposes," indicating that these species tolerate acid soil well yet can still "grow under less acid conditions." Addresses the possibility of "modifying the soil condition," profiling ammonium sulfate as inducing "acid soil condition...[which is] suitable for the growth of fine grasses, while preventing the ingress of worms and certain weeds." Recommends cautiousness while using lime on soil as "the effects of incorrect liming remain for unpleasantly long periods with a legacy of weeds and worms." Indicates the distinction between two forms of lime in the soil, explains the testing procedure for soil acidity and how to interpret the results. Addresses the unique quality of managing turf as it "is not a single crop; but is composed of different grasses and weeds growing in equilibrium with one another." Details the various types of nitrogen fertilizer and discusses the appropriate timing to fertilize.
