Abstract/Contents:Discusses weed management, indicating that while "certain weeds...are a true reflection of the soil fertility....Weediness of turf should not be regarded as the 'barometer' of soil fertility." Recommends that when comparing weeds to the fertility and health of the soil, it should "be viewed in relation to the actual plants in the sward." Addresses the various growth habits of weeds and how it enables them to survive, adding that "the suppression of weeds can be accomplished only by noting these habits of growth and designing a system of management calculated to undermining their persistency and aggressiveness. Briefly describes the ability for grasses to grow tillers and identifies it as being the "vital difference between the growth of a grass and the growth of a weed." Highlights the potential benefits of strain, claiming that it "has revolutionized...views on turf management." Discusses some principles of weed control, suggesting that "vigorous lateral growth...[and] cultural operations" are important factors in weed management. Briefly outlines the various functions of fertilizers and gives a few recommendations as to which chemicals should be employed.
