Abstract/Contents: | Discusses the preparation of air raid shelters, in 1940, explaining the need for the shelters to blend with the natural environment which requires "many acres...to be grassed at short notice." Addresses the preparation of the land for proper seeding, suggesting that "a consolidated surface which makes for maximum establishment of grass seedlings can only be obtained by rolling and harrowing alternately." Indicates the potential importance of a fertile soil, explaining that it may "influence the spread of...species quite as much as the actual species included in the seeds mixture." Recommends using a mixture of perennial ryegrasses, specifying them to be "represented by Kentish Indigenous; Pedigree S 23 and Svalof Perennial Rye-grasses." Suggests not using fine leaved grasses in the mixture, explaining that they are slow growing and may not react well to the rate of sowing established for the quick growing grasses. Presents harrowing as a potentially effective method to cover the seeds. |
