| Abstract/Contents: | "Fine particles largely determine capillary characteristics of mixed soils. In thin turf soils with compacted surfaces and underlying drainage layers, water wets the profile under capillary tension, then saturates from the interface. A perched water table remains after drainage. When elevations change, low spots become the "bottom" from which tension heads are measured, and where outflow occurs. Tension heads at higher elevations prevent soil saturation and reduce available water, which is used while low areas remain saturated by water moving in the profile. Uniform growing conditions do not obtain. Amendments can increase available water at higher elevations to increase uniformity of growing conditions." |
