Abstract/Contents:"Properly maintained lawns and recreational turfs (1) contribute a diverse array of benefits that make turfgrasses one of the best friends of the urban environmentalists and (2) greatly enhance our quality-of-life." A brief history of the evolution of turfgrasses is given. Functional, recreational, and aesthetic benefits of turfgrasses are discussed. Functional include: soil erosion control, dust prevention, heat dissapation, noise abatement, glare reduction, air pollution control, and nuisance animal reduction. Recreational include: low cost surfaces, physical health, mental health, safety, and spectator entertainment. Aesthetic include: beauty, quality of life, mental health, social harmony, community pride, increased property values, and compliments trees and shrubs in landscape.
