Abstract/Contents: | Discusses research conducted by Cornell University on the common and European crane fly species. Reports on the status of crane fly activity within the United States, stating that "on golf courses in affected areas of New York state, crane fly larvae have caused chewing damage on putting greens, nuisance accumulations on playing surfaces, die-back of rough mowed turf and disruption resulting from vertebrate predation." Mentions additionally that larvae have survived shipping in sod rolls and emerged at the site of installation, indicating that their range of infestation may grow. Suggests that superintendents making extra insecticide applications for crane fly prevention around the same time annually as white grub control applications poses a challenge to integrated pest management programming. Explains that areas of crane fly study are expanding to include early detection and identification, as well as population dynamics and feeding preferences. |
