| Abstract/Contents: | Profiles legislation regarding the use of water in the Great Lakes Basin in the northern United States. Reports that the legislation, known as The Great Lakes Compact, "will prevent states, provinces, or private companies from selling and transporting water out of the basin. The Compact also requires state governments to develop water conservation regulations to conserve and protect water resources within the Great Lakes Basin." Details the role of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in the attempt to conserve the Great Lakes, stating that "a user would be required to conduct a water audit which establishes the efficiency of the irrigation system and checks for leaks and other inefficiencies. From this information, a water conservation plan would be developed and submitted to the DNR." |
