Abstract/Contents:Briefly describes the American Coot, "a small duck-like bird...[whose] black body, red eyes, and white beak make it one of the more easily identified waterfowl." Suggests that "because of their adaptability, large numbers, and disregard for more attempts to shift them, there is still much debate over how best to control coot damage." Profiles efforts toward coot control undertaken at Metropolitan Golf Links in Oakland, California. Lists goals set by the golf course staff: (1) "Reduce damage from coots on the greens," (2) "reduce cost of maintenance on the 17th green," (3) "improve the enjoyment of golfers while playing golf," and (4) "allow coots to continue their natural migration process." Discusses the potential of fences to keep coots off greens, noting that at one golf club "fencing costs about $250, and approximately $600 in labor is spent in maintaining it. This compares to approximately $4,000 per year needed to clean and repair the coot-damaged green."
