Abstract/Contents:"Two field experiments were conducted at the University of Massachusetts Turfgrass Research Center, South Deerfield. The objective of the experiments was to compare the pre- and early post-emergence activity of five formulations of Mon-15151 (Monsanto) for the control of smooth crabgrass [ Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb. ex. Schweig.)Schreb. ex Muhl.] in perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne L.). Both experiments were conducted on established perennial ryegrass turf maintained at a height of 5 cm under low fertility. Mon-15151 EC and Mon-15104 EC each at 0.43 to 0.84 kg. ai/ha were applied to 1 by 3 m plots. Each treatment was replicated three times in a randomized complete block design. Sprayable treatments were applied with a CO2-backpack sprayer at a pressure of 152 kPa with a 11004 flat fan nozzle, giving 470 L/ha. Granules were applied by hand with a shaker bottle. Preemergence treatments were applied on April 28, 1989. Early postemergence treatments were applied on June 12, 1989, when the crabgrass was at the 3- to 4-leaf stage. Crabgrass control and turf injury were determined on May 22, July 13, and August 14, 1989. Regardless of the formulation, all treatments applied preemergence (Experiment 1) effectively controlled (95%) crabgrass 11 weeks after application (WAA). All treatments provided season-long (15 WAA) crabgrass control, except Mon-15175 G at 0.28 kg/ha which only gave 60% control. All preemergence treatments were safe to perennial ryegrass except Mon-15104 EC at 0.43 kg/ha which gave slight injury (13%). All treatments (Experiment 2), applied in early postemergence controlled crabgrass 95% or better 4 WAA. At 8 WAA, crabgrass control was excellent (90% or better) in all treatments except Mon-15189 SCU at 0.43 kg/ha, which provided significantly less control (60% control). At 8 WAA, Mon-15104 EC at 0.84 kg/ha and Mon-15175 G at 0.56 kg/ha, applied at the 3- to 4-leaf stage of crabgrass resulted in slight turf injury (20%) and all other treatments were safe to perennial ryegrass. Excellent preemergence control of smooth crabgrass was obtained with all formulations and rates except Mon-15175 G at 0.28 kg/ha which resulted in poor residual control. Postemergence control was excellent with all treatments except Mon-15189 SCU at 0.43 kg/ha which had poor residual control. In general, there was no stand thinning of perennial ryegrass due to any treatments."
