Abstract/Contents: | Summarizes advice by Dr. Norman W. Hummel, Jr., a turfgrass scientist at Cornell University, on how to protect a lawn from summer drought. Suggestions include light, frequent watering, mowing to 2 1/2 to 3 inches high to allow development of stronger root systems, and mowing more frequently to reduce water use of cool-season grasses. However, lawns should not be mowed if they are wilted or not growing. Other considerations for drought protection include nitrogren and potassium fertilization and use of drought-tolerant grasses such as tall fescues and certain cultivars of Kentucky bluegrass. Also briefly describes buffalograss, a warm-season grass which has been developed for drought resistance. |
