Abstract/Contents:"Seeds of annual ryegrass (lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennial ryegrass (L. perenne L.) cannot generally be distinguished morphol ogically. Currently an ultraviolet test (commonly called the fluorescence test) is used for this purpose but its effectiveness is diminishing with the advent of hybrids between the two species and with new varieties that do not adhere to the established fluorescing patterns. Therefore, other characteristics in the ryegrass seeds are being sought which might be more closely associated with the annual or perennial growth habit. We assumed that the protein content of the two species might differ and that such a difference might be detected with disc electrophoresis. Proteins from 30 samples of annual, 28 of perennial and 2 of hybrid ryegrass seed were examined by electrophoresis. A distinct protein was found in the perennial that was not found in either the annual or the hybrid ryegrass seed. Investigations are underway to determine if this difference in protein content can be used as a diagnostic test for distinguishing between the two species."
