| Abstract/Contents: | Measurements were made on L. perenne turf receiving a range of N treatments (0 to 625 kg ha-1) and artificial football-type wear during the winter months. Before wear, ball bounce resilience decreased with increasing N but shear strength did not show consistent results. During and after wear ball bounce depended more on the type of rootzone than on N treatments. The sand construction retained much higher values of ball bounce in winter than the soil, which became muddy. Shear strength showed similar results but they were less conclusive. There was evidence for an annual optimum N input of 225 kg ha-1 for turf shear strength, before and after wear, when data sets of similar moisture content were compared. It was concluded that a free-draining sand rootzone could provide good playing conditions at all times in winter, except during periods of deep snow cover. |
