Abstract/Contents:"This paper summarises botanical composition data collected during 1989 for an ongoing experiment investigating the fertiliser requirements of a Festuca rubra L. ssp. commutata Gaud. and Agrostis castellana Boiss. & Reut. fine turf sward grown on a sand rootzone. The trial consisted of three levels of fertiliser nitrogen (100, 200 and 400 kg ha1 yr-1 N), potassium (0, 150 and 300 kg ha-1 yr-1 K2O) and phosphorus (0, 25 and 50 kg ha-1 yr-1 P2O5) with, and without lime (0, 1427 kg ha-1 yr-1 CaCO3). With time, percentage cover of A. castellana continued to increase whilst F. rubra declined. The rates of these changes increased with increasing levels of nitrogen. In unlimed plots, the highest nitrogen regime produced a large increase in mortality of A. castellana, an effect which was particularly apparent in autumn. The percentage cover of Poa annua L. vastly incrased during 1989 in limed plots, but only increased slightly in unlimed plots. High levels of phosphorus application increased P. annua cover in limed plots. The occurrence of moss was promoted by liming and low nitrogen application."
