Abstract/Contents:Presents research conducted "to quantify major physiological and biochemical changes occurring during the cold acclimation period for four perennial ryegrass accessions varying in freezing tolerance." Details the materials and methods used in the study, stating that "plants were subjected to a cold acclimation period of 2 °C for 21 d [days] in a controlled environment chamber." Reports that "in general, proline levels increased and Fv/Fm [leaf photochemical efficiency] decreased in response to 2 °C; however, there were no differences in proline accumulation if Fv/Fm among the accessions in response to cold acclimation." Concludes that "the results from this research suggest that enhanced freezing tolerance of accessions TOL-1 and TOL-2 may be due to a greater capacity to accumulate protective compounds during cold acclimation."
