Abstract/Contents:"To compare phosphorus (P) uptake ability of grasses, some of tropical grasses, temperate grasses and legumes were cultured in pots filled with volcanic ash soil, which have never been fertilized, with or without application of P for two and a half years. Under P applied conditions, though the average amount of P uptake of tropical grasses was higher than that of temperate grasses in the first half year period, the difference between the tropical and the temperate grasses in P uptake disappeared in later period. On the other hand, the average amount of dry matter production of tropical grasses was much higher than that of temperate grasses, and P uptake was not thought to be directly correlated with dry matter production. Without P application, the difference in P uptake among grasses was larger than that with P application, and the plant species, of which P uptake was higher, varied with or without P application. To search for grasses, of which P uptake ability is high under a very low P level, P uptake of 32 speices [species] grown without P appication was compared, and the ability of two species, red top (Agrostis alba L.) and centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuoides (Munro.) Hack.), was found to be remarkably high."
