| Abstract/Contents: | "Kentucky bluegrass has been the subject of electrophoretic studies which have shown that this technique offers a rapid and reliable method of cultivar identification. This study built upon the cultivar work done previously and researched the seed esterase isoenzyme banding patterns of Kentucky bluegrass blends using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The work revealed that these banding patterns can be useful in characterizing the blend because blends composed of different components have different composite banding patterns. Extracts of the individual cultivars were run in lanes adjacent to extracts from the blend in order to determine if the individual components could be identified in the blend by the presence of bands unique to that particular cultivar. The unique bands of the individual components were detected consistently only in blends containing 2 components. Blends made of the same proportions in the laboratory matched commercial blends and if a substitution of a component was made at a 20% or greater proportion differences in the two banding profiles were detected. Because Kentucky bluegrass cultivars are commonly found in blends in both commercial and certification situations, this technique has the potential to be of use in confirming that the cultivars stated on the label were used in the blend." |
